A charge to the "Christ Ambassadors Set"

The graduating set is called the "Christ Ambassadors Set." Professor Akindele urged them to stay humble, responsible and open to learning. "Ask questions. Accept correction. Do your work carefully. If you give your word, keep it. When you make a mistake, take responsibility and put it right," he told them. He also asked them to stay connected to the university and to support younger students.

New programmes on the way

The Vice-Chancellor said the National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved 10 new full time undergraduate programmes for the 2026/2027 session, following a resource verification exercise. The programmes named in his address include Broadcasting, Public Relations and Advertising, Information and Media Studies, Journalism and Media Studies, Film Production, Criminology and Security Studies, Biotechnology, Software Engineering and Information Systems.

The university has also received NUC approval to start Pharmacy, Medicine and Surgery, and Dentistry. Approval from the relevant professional bodies is still awaited. The Redeemer's Health Village at Redemption City will serve as the teaching hospital.

Results beyond the classroom

Professor Akindele pointed to several achievements:

  • Students of Physiotherapy and Nursing have kept a 100 per cent pass rate in their external council examinations in recent years.

  • Eight Accounting students qualified as Chartered Accountants in the May 2026 diet of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN). Five belong to the current graduating class and three are still undergraduates. One of them qualified while in 200 Level.

  • The Centre for Entrepreneurial Development Studies held an exhibition and trade fair on May 14, 2026. Representatives of the Bank of Industry, SMEDAN, the Corporate Affairs Commission and the Osun State Ministry of Commerce attended. Students showed off businesses and skills in farming, baking, fashion, web development and digital marketing.

  • Vocational training now runs from 100 Level to 400 Level, and students earn an entrepreneurship certificate alongside their degree.

Research and community support

On research, he highlighted the university's strength in genomics, global health, water and environmental science. The Institute of Genomics and Global Health, led by Distinguished Professor Christian Happi, received a Mastercard Foundation grant to train scholars across Africa through short courses and MSc and PhD programmes in genomics. According to the Vice-Chancellor, Redeemer's is the only Nigerian university with such a mandate.

He also announced full scholarships for six indigenes of Ede, a gesture the university has kept up for more than a decade. He thanked the Timi of Edeland, Oba Munirudeen Adesola Lawal, along with traditional chiefs and residents, for their support, and acknowledged the Visitor, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, the Board of Trustees, the Governing Council, parents, staff, alumni and partners.

The convocation programme

Activities began on Friday, October 2, when the graduating students met the Visitor after the Holy Ghost Service at Redemption City. A thanksgiving service followed on Sunday, October 4. The remaining schedule is:

  • Tuesday, October 6: Awards and recognition ceremony at 10 a.m. at the university auditorium

  • Wednesday, October 7: Convocation lecture at 11 a.m., then the convocation play at BOJA Hall at 7:30 p.m., with a second performance the next night

  • Thursday, October 8: First day of the convocation proper, covering the Faculties of Basic Medical Sciences, Built Environment Studies, Computing and Digital Technologies, Engineering and Technology, Management Sciences and Natural Sciences. A new female hostel for the Directorate of Educational Services and Training (DEST) and a new entrepreneurship centre will be commissioned at 8:30 a.m.

  • Friday, October 9: The Faculties of Humanities, Law and Social Sciences, affiliate institutions and the College of Postgraduate Studies

Why this matters for prospective students

For anyone thinking about applying to Redeemer's, the new media, computing and health programmes widen the options. The pending approvals for Medicine, Pharmacy and Dentistry are worth watching, since they depend on professional bodies still to sign off.
