The University of Uyo has fixed a date for its 143rd Inaugural Lecture, and this one comes from the field of eye health.
Professor Emem Godwin Abraham, a Professor of Ophthalmology (Public Health Ophthalmology) in the Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, College of Health Sciences, will deliver the lecture on Thursday, 15th October, 2026, at 3:00 p.m.
His topic is “From the Cradle to the Grave: My Seasons and My Vision.” The title suggests a look back across the different stages of a life and a career, and the play on the word “vision” suits a professor of ophthalmology.
Where it will hold
The lecture will take place at the TETFund Auditorium on the Main Campus, along Nwaniba Road, Uyo. The hall seats 1,000 people.
What an inaugural lecture is
For readers who are not familiar with the tradition, an inaugural lecture is a formal public lecture given by a professor, usually after attaining the rank of professor. It is the moment the professor presents their area of study, the research they have done and the contribution they hope to make to their field and to society.
About the field
Public health ophthalmology looks at eye health at the level of whole communities, such as how vision problems spread across a population and how blindness can be prevented, rather than only treating one patient at a time.
The university has also published an invitation card for the event on its website.
