Bells University of Technology, Ota, has responded to a video making the rounds on social media, in which a student complained about the state of his room and the toilet facilities in one of the university’s halls of residence.

In a press release dated Wednesday, 21 October 2026, and signed by the Registrar, Mr. Lamidi S. Tafa, the management said the welfare, safety and dignity of students remain its top priority. It added that the public, students and parents deserve a full and factual account of what happened.

The university’s explanation of the door locks

According to the university, the locks in the affected room were repaired before students resumed, but they were damaged again within three weeks by the students living there.

Management said this is a recurring problem. Some students who misplace their room keys force the doors open instead of reporting to the Hall Porters or the Maintenance Unit. The university says this habit keeps damaging working locks and puts the belongings of roommates at risk.

The restroom repair

On the toilet, the university described the restroom as one the students repaired themselves. It said this broke existing campus rules.

Management explained that repairs to plumbing and sanitary fittings in university buildings must be handled by its approved contractors, for reasons of health, safety and insurance.

Where students should take complaints

The university also reminded students that genuine concerns should go through the approved channels. According to management, these channels exist so that problems can be solved without stirring up unnecessary emotions or creating a picture that does not match what is really happening on the ground.

An appeal to bloggers and content creators

The statement ended with a request to bloggers, content creators and broadcasters to get the university’s side of a story before they publish. Bells University said it remains open to talking with all stakeholders and the media.

What students can take from this

The statement points to a few practical steps for anyone living in a university hostel: report a lost key to the hall porter or the maintenance unit instead of forcing the door, leave plumbing and sanitary repairs to the school’s approved contractors, and use the official complaint channels to raise problems.

This report is based on the university’s press release. The student’s full claims in the video were not independently verified.
