Students in Kogi State have received N8.205 billion from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), spread across eight tertiary institutions in the state.

The money went out in two forms. About N4.124 billion covered institutional fees, the charges paid to the schools themselves, while N4.082 billion went towards upkeep, the support students use for their day-to-day costs. In all, 35,710 applications for institutional fees and 34,154 for upkeep were recorded.

Where the money went

Federal University, Lokoja took the biggest share by a wide margin. It received N3.577 billion, roughly 44 percent of the state total. Of that, N1.767 billion paid institutional fees for 15,408 applications, and N1.810 billion supported 14,655 upkeep applications.

Prince Abubakar Audu University came second with N1.956 billion. Its students accounted for 8,992 fee applications worth N904.207 million and 8,614 upkeep applications worth N1.052 billion.

Kogi State University, Kabba received N1.229 billion. That was made up of N654.877 million for institutional fees and N573.760 million for upkeep. Confluence University of Science and Technology followed with N805.238 million, and Federal Polytechnic, Idah got N609.655 million.

The smaller allocations

Four of the eight institutions recorded much lower figures. Kogi State College of Education, Ankpa received N10.354 million, and Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja got N9.378 million. Federal College of Education, Okene received N8.867 million.

The gap between the universities and the smaller colleges is striking. The two biggest recipients together took in more than N5.5 billion, while the colleges of education and polytechnic each received under N11 million.

For students in Kogi, the figures show how widely the loan scheme is being used in the state, particularly at the larger universities.
