Bayero University, Kano (BUK) has confirmed that it received N1.749 billion from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND). The money covers institutional charges for 14,990 undergraduate students under the 2025/2026 student loan scheme.
The confirmation came in a letter dated 15 July 2026, signed by the university's Registrar, Haruna Aliyu, and addressed to NELFUND's Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Akintunde Sawyerr. In it, the university thanked the agency for its support and cooperation.
Two batches, two dates
The payment did not arrive all at once. According to the letter, it came in two tranches:
First batch: N1.241 billion for 10,617 students, received on 30 April 2026.
Second batch: N507.899 million for another 4,373 students, received on 23 June 2026.
Together, the two payments cover all 14,990 beneficiaries. The university described them as the first and second tranches of institutional charges for students enrolled under the loan scheme.
What this means for students
Institutional charges are the fees a student owes the school itself, so this money goes straight to the university rather than into students' pockets. For the beneficiaries, it means their fees for the session have been taken care of by the loan fund.
