University on the Niger (UniNiger), Umunya, can now offer three new undergraduate courses after the National Universities Commission (NUC) approved them. The Commission gave its approval after carrying out a resource verification exercise at the institution.
The new programmes are Criminology and Security Studies, International Relations, and Christian Theology.
What the NUC checked
The university's Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, announced the approval in a statement on 25 September. He said the NUC team looked at whether the school was ready to run the programmes properly, including its academic resources, facilities and staffing, along with other requirements for teaching them well.
According to Prof. Nebo, the approval came after the university worked to strengthen its academic resources and infrastructure. He described it as another step in the institution's academic development.
Who the courses are for
Prof. Nebo said the new programmes will widen what the university offers and open doors for students in three areas: security and crime prevention, diplomacy and international affairs, and Christian theology and ministry.
He added that the development fits the university's aim of providing education that combines academic knowledge with character, faith and leadership. The university, he said, will keep improving its programmes and resources to meet the needs of its students.
