When the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings came out, one Nigerian school stood out on a single measure. The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) scored 69.4 per cent in research quality, the highest of any Nigerian university in this edition.
The rankings were released on September 30, 2026, at the World Academic Summit hosted by the University of Cape Town, South Africa. The details come from a statement by UNILORIN's Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Kunle Akogun.
What "research quality" actually measures
THE ranks universities across five broad pillars: teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook and industry. Research quality carries 30 per cent of the overall score. In simple terms, it looks at how often a university's research is cited by scholars around the world. A high score suggests that other researchers are reading the work and building on it.
According to Akogun, UNILORIN's research quality score was higher than those of the University of Lagos, Bayero University, Kano, and the University of Ibadan.
Moving up the global table
UNILORIN also climbed in the overall rankings. The university said it moved from the 1201 to 1500 band in the previous edition to the 1001 to 1200 band this year. That puts it among seven Nigerian universities now placed within the global top 1,200.
Note that THE places universities in this part of the table in bands rather than single positions, so the university is not claiming an exact rank.
What comes next
The university's University Ranking Implementation Project Manager, Prof. Suleiman Folorunso Ambali, said research quality remains UNILORIN's strongest area. The aim, he said, is to turn that strength into wider international recognition and to reach the 801 to 1000 band in the next edition.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, said the result was no accident. He described it as the outcome of years of patient and disciplined scholarship by colleagues whose work is read and cited worldwide. He thanked lecturers, researchers, postgraduate supervisors and students for their part in it.
Why this matters to students
University rankings are not the only way to judge a school, but research quality is worth noticing if you plan to study at postgraduate level. It reflects whether the people teaching and supervising you are producing work that the wider academic world takes seriously. For UNILORIN, the next test is whether it can keep that momentum and move into a higher band in the next edition.
