The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has received formal thanks from the body that brings Nigeria's university chiefs together. The Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNU) has commended the university for hosting its 37th Annual Conference and General Assembly, which ran from August 17 to 20, 2026.

The praise came in a letter of appreciation dated September 9, 2026. It was addressed to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, and signed by the CVCNU Secretary-General, Prof. Haruna Andrew.

Thanks for the welcome

Prof. Andrew thanked the Vice Chancellor, the management, the staff and the whole UNILORIN community for their support, cooperation and hospitality. He said the university played a pivotal role as host, and that the Vice Chancellor's leadership and commitment created the right environment for the conference to run smoothly.

The letter also singled out the warmth shown to guests and participants, along with the logistical and institutional support provided before and during the event.

A specific commitment honoured

One detail stood out in the letter. Prof. Andrew noted that UNILORIN had kept an earlier promise to provide accommodation and airport pickup for the representative of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the entourage, as well as for the Secretary-General of the Association of African Universities. He described this as a clear sign of the university's generosity and its commitment to the success of the gathering.

Credit for the organisers

Hosting a gathering of this size takes careful coordination, and the letter gave particular credit to the person who led it. Prof. Moji Bakare-Odunola, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), chaired the Local Organising Committee. Prof. Andrew commended her for excellent leadership and coordination from start to finish.

He closed by thanking the university's management for its partnership and joint effort in making the conference a memorable and impactful event.

Why it matters

The CVCNU conference is where the heads of Nigerian universities meet to discuss the state of higher education, so being chosen to host it carries weight. A formal letter of thanks from the committee suggests UNILORIN handled the job well, which adds to a busy few weeks for the university, following its recent showing in the Times Higher Education research quality scores.
