The Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi (FUTIA) in Akwa Ibom State is growing. The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved 12 additional degree programmes for the university, starting from the 2026/2027 academic session.

The university’s Registrar, Offiongita Nkang, said the approval came in an NUC letter dated September 11, 2026, after a resource verification visit to the school. With the new additions, FUTIA now has 36 approved programmes.

The 12 new programmes

  • B.Eng. Biomedical Engineering

  • B.Eng. Computer Engineering

  • B.Eng. Materials and Metallurgical Engineering

  • B.Eng. Mechatronics Engineering

  • B.Sc. Chemistry

  • B.Sc. Industrial Chemistry

  • B.Sc. Environmental Management Technology

  • B.Sc. Biotechnology

  • B.EHS. Environmental Health Science

  • B.HIM. Health Information Management

  • B.Sc. Estate Management

If you sat the 2026 UTME and want one of these courses

Candidates who qualify can use the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) to change their course to one of the new programmes.

There is an extra condition for applicants who didn’t pick FUTIA as their first choice. You need a score of at least 160 in the 2026 UTME, and you must change your first-choice institution to FUTIA on JAMB CAPS.

Physical screening is already underway

FUTIA is screening newly admitted candidates at its Takeoff Campus in Ikot Abasi. The exercise started on Monday, October 12 and runs until Friday, October 23, 2026, beginning at 8 a.m. each day.

If you chose FUTIA as your first choice, check your JAMB admission status first. If you have been offered admission, accept it, print your JAMB admission letter, and bring it to the screening along with your relevant documents.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Leo Daniel welcomed the approval and said the university would keep widening access to its courses.

For anyone eyeing engineering, health, or the sciences in Akwa Ibom, these new programmes add more options. If you plan to switch, don’t wait too long, since screening ends on October 23.
